Leading testing, inspection and certification group Bureau Veritas (BV) has awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuelled and ammonia fuel-prepared very large crude carrier (VLCC).
The approval follows completion of a project between several industry partners including TotalEnergies and GTT which sought to evaluate the potential of an LNG dual fuelled VLCC design being prepared for a later conversion to an ammonia dual fuelled VLCC.
Designed to transport large amounts of crude oil, VLCC’s have a capacity to carry between 200 and 319 thousand tonnes of crude oil during a typical journey.
Consuming as much as 100 tonnes of fuel per day, these large vessels are responsible for a significant amount of maritime greenhouse gas emissions.
