British Sugar has restarted operations at its Wissington factory, one of the UK’s largest sources of biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2), following a signed long-term agreement with Air Liquide.
Under terms of the deal, British Sugar will supply the industrial gas giant with around 20,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. This will then be purified and liquified for sale to customers across various industries, from food and beverage to pharmaceuticals.
After extracting sugar from locally grown sugar beet, the residual juice is used by a bioethanol plant located adjacent to the CO2 plant to produce a low-carbon transportation fuel (E1).
During the fermentation process of making bioethanol, raw CO2 is produced.
