bp has signed a cooperation agreement with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) to advance carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) efforts in Indonesia.
Plans to develop a new Tangguh CCS hub and support the existing Tangguh CCUS project are included in the agreement. Both efforts will serve as a “test model” for further carbon capture projects in the country.
The Tangguh CCUS project is currently the most advanced in Indonesia. In its initial phase, it has the potential to inject more than 30 million tonnes of CO2 back into the reservoir, contributing to 5% of Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in the energy sector.
With an ultimate CO2 storage capacity of 1.8 gigatonnes, Tangguh has the potential to become a regional CCS hub and support the Net Zero ambition for both Indonesia and Asia Pacific.
