UK supermajor bp has signed an agreement with PetroChina to build a carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) cluster in Hainan province in southern China.
The initial goal of the partnership is to expand the cooperation on international projects, covering shale gas exploration and the development of fuel retailing ventures in China along with technology, operational, and sub-surface techniques used in low carbon projects.
China Southern Petroleum has also worked out plans to build CCUS projects in Hainan with capacity of 1Mtpa of carbon dioxide (CO2), expandable to 10Mtpa in future.
China is home to the largest and some of the youngest assets for coal-fired power plants as well as cement, iron and steel, and chemical plants.
