Bluefors opens first US lab in Chicago to boost quantum research

Cryogenic measurement systems specialist Bluefors has brought its lab services to the US for the first time, having opened a new facility in Chicago.

Bluefors Lab in the US state will provide start-ups, research groups, and other organisations access to a cryogenic measurement system with a service-based model.

It will feature a Bluefors LD400 dilution refrigerator and additional experimental space. The service also includes access to Quantum Machines’ OPX 1000 hybrid control electronics with modules for five-qubit measurements.

Additional measurement electronics and infrastructure can be added by lab users.

Anssi Salmela, Chief Technical Operations Officer at Bluefors, described the opening as a significant milestone for the company, expanding its lab-as-a-service concept.

“This new hub will help foster groundbreaking advancements in the US and around the world. By broadening our lab offering, we not only enhance our global service offering, but also accelerate learning and continuous developments in the quantum space.”

The news follows Bluefors opening its first Bluefors Lab in Delft, the Netherlands, in March 2023. To date, the Delft facility has been used to carry out R&D and to develop quantum computing solutions.

In March 2023, Bluefors completed its acquisition of US cryocooler business Cryomech to help grow its business in the US market.

Speaking to gasworld around the time of the transaction, Jonas Geust, CEO of Bluefors, said, “Bluefors was purely a Finnish business, based here in Helsinki and selling around the world. But we have always done a lot of business in the US – about half of all our sales, in fact.”

“As a business, we always faced the question of how to expand our presence in our key North American market. One obvious potential solution was through an acquisition, and with Cryomech, which is based in New York state, the very obvious candidate.”
