Blue ammonia prospects are strong, says Air Products CEO

Air Products is confident about how the blue ammonia markets are shaping up, ahead of its massive Louisiana Clean Energy Complex, which will make blue hydrogen and blue ammonia, being fully commissioned and coming onstream in 2028.

It is confident, said the industrial gases major’s CEO, Chairman and President Seifi Ghasemi on the company’s latest earnings call, because there is latent demand for ammonia to decarbonise power plants in Japan and Korea. Next to this, the shipping industry is also starting to shift to ammonia to avoid carbon emissions taxes that will apply from January 2025 in Europe.

“We have always said that [the blue ammonia produced] is going to go mainly for decarbonisation of the power plants in Japan and in Korea,” said Ghasemi.

But, he added, the maritime industry “has already ordered ships that will use ammonia as a fuel, and some of them will be on the water in 2026.”
