Industrial gas companies must expand access to medical oxygen in the long term, according to a newly released report from the Access to Medicine Foundation (the Foundation).
Although having taken steps to address critical oxygen shortages in some low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) during the Covid-19 pandemic, industrial gas companies could – and should – be doing more to better address access to medical oxygen, says the report.
In 2021, it was estimated that 73 million people with low blood oxygen (hypoxemia) attended healthcare facilities in LMICs, and of those, only 22 million were suffering from Covid-19, with many others needing oxygen due to other conditions and procedures.
