Oil and gas major bp has selected BASF’s gas treating technology to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from its blue hydrogen production facility in Teesside, which is targeting 1.2GW of hydrogen production by 2030.
BASF’s OASE® technology adds an amine-based solvent agent to the gas stream, where it absorbs CO2. After this, the CO2 and amine are separated from the hydrogen rich gas stream before being separated once more by fractionation.
The CO2 can then be sent for storage, and the OASE solvent agent is re-used in the process.
It is thought that H2Teesside could capture around two million tonnes of CO2 per year via the bp-led Northern Endurance partnership.
