BASF and Evonik commit to biomass-balanced ammonia

BASF and its customer Evonik have agreed on the first delivery of BASF’s ammonia BMBcertTM grade.

The product, whose carbon footprint is at least 65% lower than the standard one, is available through existing sales channels and fully integrated into the companies’ ERP systems.

The so-called ‘biomass-balanced approach’ replaces fossil resources at the beginning of the production process with certified biomethane from biowaste raw materials.

BASF is using electricity from renewable sources for the manufacturing of ammonia, further reducing its footprint.

Evonik is targeting a 25% cut in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and 11% drop in Scope 3 in line with 2021 levels, and aiming for climate neutrality by 2050, the same year as BASF.

Silvia Torrado, Global Procurement Director for Base Petrochemicals at Evonik, said, “This collaboration witnesses our dedication to environmental stewardship and our ability to innovate in a rapidly changing market.”

BMBcertTM grade is certified according to ISCC PLUS standards.

Under a recently announced corporate shake up, Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions, Battery Materials, and Coatings and Agricultural Solutions are now stand-alone businesses.

The company is budgeting total cash inflow of around €2bn from its exit from the oil and gas business. Wintershall Dea’s exploration and production business (excluding Russia-related activities) was transferred to Harbour Energy on September 3.

In July, BASF and ENGIE signed a seven-year biomethane purchase agreement in which the latter will supply 2.7-3.0 TwH of biomethane throughout the term.

Biomethane is used as a substitute for fossil raw materials in chemical production at BASF’s Ludwigshafen and Antwerp sites.

Evonik is focusing on bio-based solutions, the energy transition, and the circular economy under its innovation strategy, which should generate additional sales of €1.5bn by 2032, compared with 2023.
