BASF and AM Green have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore low-carbon chemicals production in India using renewable energy.
The co-operation includes a non-binding Letter of Intent for the offtake of 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, produced from pump storage projects at AM Green’s plants.
Ammonia will meet EU standards for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) as defined in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). Some of AM Green’s facilities have already been pre-certified.
Dr. Markus Karnieth, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF, said it was committed to the sustainable transformation of the industries it serves and convinced India is the right place to explore low-carbon chemical production.
Mahesh Kolli, Group President of AM Green, said It envisages catering to “multiple chemical downstream and associated consumer industries by providing key green molecule feedstocks to produce chemicals, materials and products in the markets served by BASF.”
AM Green’s production of green ammonia across multiple locations in India will accelerate the country’s goal of reaching 5 Mtpa of green ammonia capacity by 2030.
RWE Supply & Trading signed an MOU with AM Green Ammonia (AMG) for the long-term supply of green ammonia from its plants in India with deliveries slated from 2027 last month.
It outlines the supply of up to 250,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year.
The ammonia will be sourced from production sites in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, and Tuticorin. Initially, 50,000 tonnes of green ammonia will be produced at the Kakinada site, with the remaining volume to be sourced from Tuticorin.
