The Austrian government recommends lifting the ban on CO2 geological storage as it steps up its carbon management and strives to become climate neutral by 2040.
Its Carbon Management Strategy (CMS) was recently adopted by circular resolution, incorporating CCS, CCU and CDR in a bid to curtail emissions particularly in hard-to-abate sectors.
As CO2 storage availability will be limited in the near future, the government intends to allow geological storage only for hard-to-abate GHG emissions generated by industries and other specific sectors, in accordance with ‘strict safety and environmental conditions’.
Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler said, “As a last resort for unavoidable emissions, we need ways to store CO2 under strict safety and environmental regulations. With the Carbon Management Strategy, we now have a guideline for exactly this as to what measures will be needed to achieve this.”
