The only helium production plant in the southern hemisphere has shut down after the gas supply at the Santos-owned liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Darwin was exhausted.
Energy multinational BOC had been producing helium at the site as a by-product of LNG since 2010. However, after Santos’ Bayu-Undan gas field was depleted, Santos was forced to temporarily close its plant, causing Linde-owned BOC to cease helium production.
The plant was responsible for around 3% of the global supply of helium, which BOC aims to continue fulfilling by importing helium from other Linde plants located worldwide.
