AtkinsRéalis secures contract to support Pacific Northwest hydrogen hub

The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association (PNWHA) has awarded engineering services company AtkinsRéalis with a contract to help develop the Pacific Northwest hydrogen hub.

Under terms of a project management office (PMO) contract, AtkinsRéalis will administer all subrecipient agreements, provide project management oversight, and report to the US Department of Energy on project status.

In July (2024), PNWHA became the second US hydrogen hub to secure first phase funding from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to officially launch the hub.

The multi-state hub wants to produce exclusively green hydrogen to drive down electrolyser costs and hydrogen production. It has not said how many tonnes of hydrogen it plans to produce.

Focused on an initial eight projects, the hub wants to use green hydrogen to decarbonise heavy-duty transportation, agriculture and industrial operations.

To support this goal, AtkinsRéalis brings experience in managing large Department of Energy programmes. The company also manages active green ammonia projects in Atlantic Canada and Asia, the Middle East, and Australia.

Additionally, it has blue hydrogen projects in the US and Scotland, as well as salt cavern hydrogen storage in England.

Joe McBrearty, Interim President of AtkinsRéalis US Nuclear, said, “We possess an exceptional track record of success throughout the entire hydrogen value chain from electrolyser design and manufacturing to development, engineering, design, construction and commissioning of full facilities.”

The DOE plans to establish six to ten regional clean hydrogen hubs across America.

In October 2023, ARCH2, ARCHES, HyVelocity, Heartland, MACH2, MachH2, and PNWH2, were named as the successful hubs that will be receive between $400m and $1.25bn of federal funds.

Joe St. Julian, President of Nuclear at AtkinsRéalis, adds that hydrogen energy plays a significant role in powering the global transition to Net Zero.
