Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has announced plans for a semiconductor-focused workforce training facility that will offer hands-on training in support of the developing semiconductor.
Launched in partnership with industry, education, and government leaders, the Future48 Workforce Accelerator at GateWay Community College in Phoenix will feature a full-size mock clean room with 11 customisable modular stations.
At the facility, students will learn the basics of semiconductor processing, including cleaning, probing, photolithography, and automated handling. The site will also offer training in maintenance, programming, and integration techniques involving robotic applications and industry devices.
The semiconductor training facility is being supported by $22.5m of funding from the Arizona Commerce Authority, Governor’s Office, and federal appropriations led by Senators Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema.
Governor Katie Hobbs described the programme as an unparalleled opportunity for Arizonans to be job-ready for the semiconductor industry, which is powering the future.
The accelerator, which will be located at GateWay Community College’s Central City Campus, is expected to be completed by 2026.
Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, said, “The accelerator represents a unique partnership between industry, academia, and government that embodies Arizona’s collaborative approach to workforce development.”
Arizona’s Future48 Workforce Accelerators are supported through a $30m investment from the ACA to build six new advanced manufacturing training facilities across the state in partnership with local community colleges.
In August 2022, President Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act, part of his Investing in America agenda. The act was launched with a goal to strengthen US supply chains, create good-paying jobs, protect national security, and advance US competitiveness.
Arizona is a key hot spot for semiconductor manufacturing in the US. Since 2020, the state has won more than 40 semiconductor expansions, representing over $102bn in capital investment and over 15,700 direct industry jobs.
