Scotland finds itself in the decarbonisation spotlight and, as befits its pivotal role in UK energy, everyone is having their say.
In the latest example of climate targets clashing with political and economic realities, the Scottish Government is dropping its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030. Net Zero Secretary Mairi McAllan said it must now chart a course to 2045 at a pace and a scale that is “feasible, fair and just”.
Ministers were forced to act after a hard-hitting report from the independent watchdog, the Climate Change Committee (CCC), concluded that the 75% target by 2030 is no longer feasible.
First Minister Humza Yousaf insisted there is “no intention” to roll back from the 2045 Net Zero deadline.
