A major geologic carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project is one step closer to fruition in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
The landmark site is reckoned to have capacity to sequester 2,700,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) annually, which would make it the largest project of its type in the US.
Gulf Coast Sequestration (GSC), owned by Matilda Stream Management, is behind the development. Last week (13th Oct) it initiated the process for obtaining a Class VI Underground Injection Control permit from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Filing for the permit application comes after years of comprehensive data collection and analysis, which determined that the area’s geologic pore space is suited to build and operate a large-scale carbon sequestration project.
