Amogy is currently working on the first maritime application of ammonia power.
Speaking at the Decarbonisation Summit in New Jersey last week, Anastasija Kuprijanova, Director of Maritime Business Development, said, “It’s the conversion of a 1960s Tugboat, that’s happening about two hours north of us here. For a moment of maritime romanticism, it originally served the purpose of transporting marine grade diesel around Norfolk Harbour, so it really feels full circle for it to be the first ammonia-powered vessel.”
She said the NH3 Kraken project, featuring modular 200kW Amogy powerpacks, also demonstrates that renewable energies “are not just for new builds” – which in this instance meant ripping out everything “and turning her into a canoe” before installing new technologies below deck.
“Looking at this vessel, you wouldn’t be able to tell whether it’s running on conventional power or something new,” she said. “Naturally a project like this takes a village, so we have great partners and integrators who are working on the components and sensors, and a lot of people working on the safety aspect – which is first and foremost.”
