The cause of a fire at an Airgas branch in Kansas, which is suspected to have caused major damage to the building and contents inside, is still unknown – according to fire fighters investigating the incident.
When crews arrived at the scene, in Wichita at 2pm local time (8pm GMT), heavy smoke was seen billowing from the building – shortly followed by flames becoming visible. The fire was contained and under control in about an hour – with no staff from Airgas or emergency service staff being injured.
According to a statement from Airgas, reported by KSN.COM, “Our Wichita branch primarily stocks industrial gases, such as nitrogen, oxygen, argon, helium, and hydrogen in cylinders, but we also fill liquid nitrogen in small cryogenic containers at this location. In addition, we stock a variety of hardgoods there, such as welding related products and safety equipment. The branch serves as a distribution point from which we deliver cylinders to customers on our trucks, as well as a customer walk-in location.”
So far it has been discovered that contractors were working on the roof when the fire broke out – although there has been no suggestion this was linked to the cause of the blaze.
