Airfix and The Carbon Removers join forces to tackle Europe’s carbon emissions

As part of a new project to combat climate change, carbon removal firm Airfix has announced a new partnership with The Carbon Removers, formerly known as Carbon Capture Scotland.

This collaboration aims to accelerate the deployment of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions, with a particular focus on bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) in the UK, Denmark and the Netherlands.

“By combining our capabilities in innovative CO2 solutions with Airfix’s expertise, we can amplify our efforts and accelerate effective carbon removal strategies,” says Sanjay Parekh, Chief Commercial Officer of The Carbon Removers.

As Europe ramps up its climate commitments, this partnership aligns with the region’s ambitious carbon removal targets. The projects initiated through this collaboration are expected to remove up to 30,000 tonnes of CO2 annually in the UK by 2026, with an eye on scaling that number to 100,000 tonnes across Europe by 2027.

The projects will specifically target biogenic CO2 emissions from agricultural waste, distilleries and breweries. This approach not only aims to reduce greenhouse gases but also promises to generate additional revenue for local economies, creating a dual benefit in the pursuit of sustainability.

Captured CO2 will be securely transported and permanently stored, either in carbonated building materials or geological sites, including locations in the North Sea.

Aymeric Reymond, Head of Project Development at Airfix, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership’s potential to make a tangible difference.

“The whole team at The Carbon Removers is hands-on, efficient, driven, and committed to having a positive climate impact. It’s incredible to formalise this strategic partnership today, with the ambition to scale the BECCS market in Europe,” he said.

Before rebranding as The Carbon Removers, the company was known as Carbon Capture Scotland, founded by Scottish brothers Ed and Richards Nimmons. The organisation has been involved in carbon removal initiatives across Scotland and the broader UK.

Among its projects is the St. Fergus Carbon Capture and Storage project, which aimed to capture CO2 emissions from natural gas processing facilities and securely store them underground.

Carbon Capture Scotland also played a role in the Grangemouth Industrial Carbon Capture project, focusing on reducing emissions from one of Scotland’s largest industrial complexes.

With a history in carbon management, Airfix has worked on the Aberdeen Carbon Capture and Storage project, which focuses on capturing emissions from industrial sources and securely storing them underground.

The company has also played a role in the Green Hydrogen project in Scotland, which aims to produce hydrogen fuel from renewable sources while minimising CO2 emissions.
