Air Products has unveiled its plans to develop a network of hydrogen refuelling stations across the state of California.
The industrial gas giant wants the network to be made up of permanent, commercial-scale, multi-modal hydrogen stations stretching from the north to the south of California.
If given the green light, the development would be part of Air Products’ commitment to invest $15bn in clean energy megaprojects globally by 2027.
Air Products hopes that each of the sites will be able to fuel up to 200 heavy-duty trucks or 2,000 cars per day.
Eric Guter, Vice-President of Hydrogen for Mobility at Air Products, confirmed the company’s ambitions at the California Hydrogen Convention this week (29th May).
“Building robust hydrogen economy infrastructure is critical to the success of the energy transition and meeting our climate goals,” he said.
“Working together, energy companies, vehicle manufacturers, and governments can accelerate the energy transition and generate a cleaner future for all.”
Air Products currently operates six hydrogen refuelling stations in southern California.
Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to California’s Governor Gavin Newsom, described infrastructure as the key to unlocking the nation’s hydrogen future. She further welcomed Air Products’ commitment for the state.
She added, “These stations are steps on the path to our end goal – eliminating the need for diesel in our transportation sector.”
In September 2020, Governor Newsom issued an executive order that established a target for 100% of in-state sales of new passenger cars and trucks to be zero emission by 2035 and set similar goals for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and off-road vehicles.
The state hopes to have 1.5 million zero emissions on the roads by 2025.
