Air Products signs 10-year solar deal in Taiwan to slash emissions

Air Products has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement for solar electricity with Tatung Forever Energy, a subsidiary of Tatung Company, in Taiwan.

Unveiled today (28th August), the agreement will see Air Products San Fu, the Taiwanese arm of the industrial gas giant, source a portion of its energy for industrial gases production from the renewable energy source. This will avoid carbon dioxide emission equivalent to electricity-related emissions from more than 80,000 households in Taiwan.

The 10-year deal will start in the fourth quarter (Q4) 2024.

Paul Yang, President of Air Products San Fu, said the agreement will reduce the company’s environmental footprint and help customer in various sectors achieve their sustainability goals.

He added, “As a leading industrial gases player in Taiwan, Air Products San Fu is committed to working closely with the government, customers, and suppliers to accelerate Taiwan’s industrial decarbonisation and support the roadmap of ‘Executive Yuan’ towards an innovative industrial ecosystem for green technologies.”

Launched in 2020, the National Development Plan laid out by Executive Yuan focuses on several areas to ensure continued growth and resilience for Taiwan, while being environmentally conscious.

The plan also lays out Taiwan’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Huang Yun-Wei, General Manager of Tatung Forever Energy, added, “With international awareness of carbon reduction on the rise, the demand for renewable energy is growing rapidly.”

“We are very glad to cooperate with enterprises like Air Products San Fu on solar electricity and look forward to our further collaboration to achieve carbon neutrality through improved power stability and utilisation efficiency.”

News of Air Products’ power purchase agreement follows the company earlier this month (August 2024) announcing a goal to quadruple the amount of renewable energy used to make its products by 2030 compared to a 2023 baseline.

This was one of two new sustainability goals outlined in the industrial gas giant’s 2024 Sustainability Report, which supports the path to Net Zero by 2050.
