Sharp, Enel Green Power (EGP) and STMicroelectronics (STM) are establishing a combined venture for production of thin photovoltaic (PV) cells in Catania Province, Sicily.
The plans are expected to take effect from 2011; while the three companies will invest a total capital of €700 m. Air Liquide Group has secured the supply right for gas to the new production plant, while Taiyo Nippon Sanso will supply the large exhaust gas abatement system. Similarly, Sharp will provide process technology for thin film PV cell production.
The project is to be based in STM’s semi-conductor plant and is expected to have an annual PV cell capacity of 160 MW. Following expansion, this is anticipated to rise to 480 MW.
Thin film PV cells, Sharp and EGP will establish ES solar Farms with each providing half. The combined annual capacity of their PV plants will produce a total capacity of over 500 MW.
EGP is a group of Enel, which is the largest electric power company in Italy.
