Air Liquide will invest €100m in a new air separation unit (ASU) and the upgrading of four existing units in Germany and Bulgaria to supply Aurubis, a provider of non-ferrous metals and one of the largest copper recyclers globally.
Under terms of a signed deal announced today (25th July), the industrial gas giant will supply large volumes of oxygen and nitrogen to support the production of copper and other metals.
The new ASU will be located in Western Bulgaria and will replace withstanding older units, producing larger volumes of oxygen and nitrogen, and using 7% less electricity. It is hoped that the plant will be up and running by 2027.
Over in Germany, Air Liquide will revamp an existing four ASUs on Aurubis’ premises. The revamping of these sites will also be complete in 2027, in line with the new ASU addition.
