ABB, Charbone plan 15 North American green hydrogen sites in five years

ABB and Charbone Hydrogen Corporation plan to develop up to 15 green hydrogen facilities across North America over the next five years, with a first project located in Québec, Canada.

Under a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the companies have agreed to connect Charbone’s inaugural plant in Sorel-Tracy to the Hydro-Québec grid as a first move.

The facility, scheduled to go live by the end of Q2 2025, is intended to serve as a blueprint for future projects and will produce around 400kg of hydrogen in its first phase.

A second site in the greater Detroit area has also been agreed.

Initially, ABB will standardise the plants’ basic engineering for systems and components. It could operate as the main automation, electrification and telecom contractor in the future.

The partners plan to supply hydrogen from the new facilities to heavy industries that currently use grey hydrogen.

For the Quebec plant, this could be supported by the Provincial Government’s local strategy of supporting hydrogen and bioenergy’s use in industrial sectors like transportation, primary metals and chemicals.

Charbone Chief Operating Officer, Daniel Charette, said the new partnership with ABB was a “strong and significant signal” about the firm’s offering to the North American green hydrogen market.
