8 Rivers progresses carbon capture project at Wyoming power plant

Decarbonisation technology firm 8 Rivers Capital, with an HQ in North Carolina, has awarded global engineering company Wood a preliminary front-end engineering and design (pre-FEED) contract for its Wyoming carbon capture project.

The project, which is a collaboration between 8 Rivers and Oregon-headquartered utility PacifiCorp, is located at Rocky Mountain Power’s established power plant to cut emissions. The companies hope the pre-FEED will be completed in Q3 2025.

8 Rivers and PacifiCorp signed a Memorandum of Understanding last year to evaluate a potential carbon capture project at one of PacifiCorp’s utility sites.

The project will deploy 8 Rivers’ Allam-Fetvedt Cycle (AFC) power cycle technology, paired with direct-fired supercritical CO2 turbines.

8 Rivers is developing the CO2 turbines with Siemens Energy. In August, the companies announced a collaboration to develop a zero-emission turbine to create electricity from captured CO2.

Since 2023, the pair has been working to develop the turbines across a range of applications and fuel types.

8 Rivers has also completed a study with a commercial party that assessed the feasibility of a biomass fuelled Allam-Fetvedt Cycle (AFC) negative emissions power system.

Rocky Mountain Power, which will now deploy the technology, has been evaluating carbon capture projects at its Wyoming coal facilities since 2018.

With support from the US federal Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) in 2014, which helps balance electricity supply and demand, the company has cut its carbon emissions by 35 million tonnes.

Damian Beauchamp, President and Chief Development Officer at 8 Rivers, said, “We recognise the critical role technology plays in strengthening Wyoming’s energy independence and economic resilience.”
