Despite ISO being instrumental in standardising much of the equipment we use in the gases industry today, sometimes it takes a fresh pair of eyes from outside the industry to indicate where gaps exist.
Such an event arose recently with a family-owned brewery, for whom the safe use of beverage gas cylinders is an essential part of their business. Having dedicated itself for 200 years to making life as safe and convenient for all of its employees, the design of an element of gas control equipment that we in the gases industry use every day, was surprisingly found to not be guided by an international standard. This variability could easily have created a business-critical supply situation for the brewer.
As part of this brewer’s commitment to technology and caring for every individual involved in the business, it uses only the lightest possible aluminium cylinders, as it knows that all gas deliveries are performed by its own people, to its own pubs, whose bar staff must also manoeuvre the cylinders during their daily work.
