In recent years, Emissions Control Area (ECA) legislation and the high price of fuel has led to a need for ship owners to seek alternatives to oil as a marine fuel. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) has seen an increase in demand as the alternative fuel of choice. The main types of ships that started this trend had been small ferries, cruise vessels or offshore vessels.
That all changed when the LNG carrier ships and dual fuel engines for the large cargo ships were released, with LNG going from strength to strength.
