The Paris Agreement is the first global treaty on climate change signed by 195 countries with the goal of limiting the rise in the average temperature of the Earth to max. 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
In order to achieve these results, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has defined six areas of action: use of renewable energy, energy efficiency, electrification, hydrogen, and CO2 (carbon dioxide) removal.
One of the most innovative projects is related to the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, but it is not found in an unbound state on our planet. To separate it from the other elements, it is bound to oxygen and carbon and must be extracted through thermal cracking processes – for hydrocarbons – or electrolysis, in the case of water.
