When it comes to industrial gas distributors, most of those involved in the industry have a broad service offering, with extensive hardgoods sales nestling alongside the supply of a wide range of gases as well as, increasingly, bespoke specialty gas mixes. Every business is subtly different, of course, but most are operating in that ballpark.
But not Tex-Air Gas, based in Amarillo, Texas. This is a business with roots stretching back to the early 1950s, just like many other industrial gas distributors, when it was founded as a welding supply company, but which for about 30 years now has exclusively traded in wholesale helium.
“It’s a distinctive offer, sure, but there are good reasons for it,” says a smiling Jim Prowell Jr, who I’m interviewing alongside his son Joe. Today, the pair run the business together, as they have since 2017, with Joe as President after 2021 and Jim as Executive Vice-President.
