An SGR Special Report
In the early days of July, Specialty Gas Report attended the 44th annual SEMICON West show, the preeminent event in the US semiconductor and micro-electronics industry. SEMICON West 2014 was held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California, from July 8–14, and the event was spectacular.
According to post-show reports, 26,140 visitors and exhibitors attended SEMICON West and the jointly held Intersolar North America this year. International interest in the show continues to increase, with international visitor attendance growing 21 percent over 2013, boosting the international presence to 15 percent of total visitors.
As it does every year, SEMICON West again featured every aspect of the micro-electronics supply chain, including electronic design automation, device fabrication (wafer processing), and final manufacturing (assembly, packaging, and test). The show also featured micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), photovoltaics (PV), flexible electronics and displays, nano-electronics, solid state lighting (LEDs), and related technologies.
A pervasive topic at this year’s event was sustainability and conservation of materials used in micro-electronic production. Tangentially, environmental awareness and compatibility was also a dominant theme. The SEMI EHS Division along with SEMICON West offered a four-day forum during the conference. Overseen by the SEMI Global Care program, this event offered attendees a chance to hear speakers from companies throughout the world discuss a wide variety of environment, health, safety (EHS), sustainability, and social responsibility topics that affect high tech manufacturing.
