Valves are used all along the industrial gas and cryogenic gas supply chains – for production and transportation, for trans-fill operations into storage containers, and in end-use customer piping circuits.
There are a few categories of valve. Some isolate product flow, others control the flow of a gas or liquid, and some valves regulate pressure or relieve excess pressure.
This fourth installment in our gasworld series on valve essentials will look at pressure safety relief devices: at how they work, where they are used, and at how they should be installed. They come in various forms, including globe, gate, ball, diverter, needle, butterfly, pressure relief and diaphragm valves, as well as regulators. Read the other three earlier features – on, respectively, flow control and isolation valves, ball valves, and check valves – at gasworld.com.
