The troubled economies of South America are facing another year of trade and fiscal uncertainty, if various informed projections are realised over the next 12 months.
Latin American and Caribbean economies contracted 0.4% on average in 2015, according to figures from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
This would appear to have been corroborated by challenging results in the gases industry, at least as far as the industry’s leading Tier One player in the region was concerned. Praxair, Inc. has reported third quarter (Q3) 2015 sales of $343m in South America, 34% below the prior year quarter. The company noted weak macro-economic trends in the region in the quarter, and weaker underlying industrial activity in Brazil in particular.
