CryoGas International publisher, John Campbell, recently met with Anne Roby, President of both Praxair Asia and Praxair Electronics worldwide, to talk about the company’s growth in China and its bright future prospects. Roby is based in Shanghai.
John Campbell (Campbell): Anne, as President of both Praxair Asia and Praxair Electronics, what can you tell us about the current scope of Praxair’s business in China?
Anne Roby (Roby): Praxair formed its first joint venture in China in 1992 and started up operations in Beijing in 1993. Contracts with leading Chinese and global steel, chemical, and electronics customers quickly followed. Today, Praxair sales in China total just over $500 million and are expected to grow 15–20 percent a year through 2014, based on contracted projects already in our pipeline. Headquartered in Shanghai, Praxair China is one the country’s leading industrial gas suppliers with 21 wholly owned companies, nine joint ventures, and more than 1,300 employees. About 16 percent of Praxair’s total capital expenditures are going into China.
