Molly Burgess talks to two SAF producers about how they are supporting the Net Zero push in aviation – and navigating some turbulence
The US federal government’s Net Zero target for the aviation industry by 2050 is challenging. Aviation represents around 11% of the country’s transportation-related emissions but is of course hard to decarbonize.
One of the most promising ways to improve the carbon intensity of flying is sustainable aviation fuel – SAF for short. SAF describes a class of alternative fuels made from non-petroleum feedstocks that don’t require modifications to aircraft engines. It’s a favored solution in a world where low-carbon alternatives don’t yet look scalable.
