Oxygen’s role in gasification to cut carbon

0

Of all the uses of the air gases, oxygen’s use in oxygen-blown gasification, where it replaces or supplements air as the oxidant, is a crucial play in decarbonisation, by enabling carbon capture when paired with CCS (carbon capture and storage).

What’s the gasification process? There are a few contexts for it, in fact.

Gasification is used to convert solids or liquids to heat and syngas. It can valorise municipal solid waste (MSW), forestry waste, or black liquor from pulp and paper making. It can also be used to convert solid and liquid petroleum refinery waste streams such as petcoke and vacuum residue (or vacres for short). Oxygen-fed gasification is especially common in China due to an abundance of local coal and the high cost of imported fuels.
