Hydrogen is often considered to be the energy carrier of the future by many industrial companies. Although the oldest and most common element in our universe, there are no natural hydrogen deposits, and so the production of hydrogen plays a key role in the industrial gases industry.

It has long been used in a range of sectors, such as oil refining and electronic manufacturing, with its uses beginning to rapidly expand into increasingly popular areas like fuel cell technologies. With challenges like climate change facing society, many companies consider hydrogen to be a key ingredient in the transition to renewable energy.

gasworld Business Intelligence estimates that roughly 40 million metric tonnes of hydrogen is produced globally each year – mostly by steam methane reformers (SMR). However, as other, more environmentally-friendly methods like electrolysis and generators continue to gain momentum, we ask if the SMR technique is starting to metaphorically run out of steam and could be challenged within the industry.
