The rise and fall of economic indicators makes headline news daily, yet the health of the bones of that economy, our nation’s infrastructure, goes largely unreported until a bridge collapses or a dam lets go.
The condition of our infrastructure, like that of our financial institutions, has an immense impact on our ability to prosper as a nation.
One group that is vigilant about protecting our built environment is the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), which represents more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries. The society describes itself as “at forefront of a profession that plans, designs, constructs, and operates society’s economic and social engine – the built environment – while protecting and restoring the natural environment.”
