The phasedown of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants is happening in the US, with the switchover to the more environmentally friendly hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants now well under way.
The phasedown is further ahead in Europe and Japan, but the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act of 2020 means the US is now making solid progress.
The AIM Act authorizes the US Environmental Protection Agency to address HFCs in three main ways. First, by phasing down HFC production, consumption, and imports through an allowance allocation program, secondly by helping sectors to move to new refrigerant technologies with better environmental impact, and lastly by regulating how HFC refrigerants are used less and reclaimed.
