Dominating headlines, the CDL driver shortage has become a major crisis within the industry. It was ranked as the top overall concern within the industry for the third straight year in the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) Top Industry Issues survey.
Tank truck fleets are feeling the shortage to an even larger degree, particularly those transporting oil and gas. The various qualifications and standards necessary to drive a tank truck shrink the pool of available candidates.
Not only do tank truck drivers have separate standards and need to meet additional requirements than those set for a CDL driver, but they must be willing and able to transport and handle dangerous substances, such as industrial gases, hazmat and cryogenic material.
