Hydrogen has been consistently in the news of late and, indeed, throughout 2016 as a whole. From new plants coming on-stream to clean fuel contracts and fuel cell technology collaborations, hydrogen is arguably in demand like never before.
Industrial gas companies continue to supply hydrogen in large volumes through on-site pipeline supply to oil and gas refineries, basic and specialty chemical manufacturers, and food processors. Added to which, the ongoing rise of hydrogen generation for clean fuel applications is firmly gaining momentum – and one might be forgiven for thinking this is the driver behind continued growth in global hydrogen demand in 2015.
But another change is in the air in hydrogen demand and production. While still dominated by demand for ammonia production and oil refining, demand associated with methanol production has experienced the most growth in recent years according to Daryl Brown, a Senior Research Engineer at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the US.
