Over the past couple of decades several themes have been evolving in the area of ‘cylinder technology’. I will concentrate on a few of these within this summary article.
Of primary interest has been the drive to minimise the weight of the cylinder with a view to improving its overall gas carrying efficiency. Close on the heel of an efficient gas cylinder concept, is another interpretation of an efficient gas containment envelope in the form of convenience, namely all relevant components such as the valve, regulator, contents gauge, its traceability are contained within one package.
While the external protection has always been of importance from a cosmetics point of view, the recent possible extension of a cylinder’s periodic inspection interval has now become critical both from a safety point of view too.
