Like many of its fellow Japanese industrial gas majors, Iwatani Corporation heads into 2014 driven by diversification. The company has high ambitions and, perhaps, even higher challenges ahead.
Founded in 1930 when Naoji Iwatani launched an oxygen and welding supplies business, Iwatani Corporation (Iwatani) found considerable success as the largest industrial gas distributor in the Kansai area of Japan in pre-war times.
The launch of its liquid petroleum gas (LPG) business in 1953 is credited as enabling the company to take a ‘great leap’ forward in the years that followed, resulting in both a fuel revolution for Japanese consumers and the first steps in diversification for Iwatani.
