After cylinders are installed and/or put into service they become exposed to numerous elements, some not compatible with the cylinder material. These elements may cause corrosion and weaken the metal and valves. In some circumstances the cylinder may be exposed to other stresses which could develop into cracks.
Facilities may assign staff to check the cylinders on a regular basis. However, difficulties arise when staff are not trained on what may weaken a cylinder, cause corrosion or become a serious safety concern.
