Aquaculture – farmed fish and shellfish, rather than wild-caught – is big business now, with global demand for fish protein increasing year on year. Projections show growth of 14% by 2030 versus 2020 levels.
But the amount of wild-caught seafood remains flat, with more than 85% of the world’s fisheries already stretched. So all that projected growth must come from aquaculture.
And aquaculture is notable because needs an oxygen supply, as well as some specialty gases. In 2024, it surpassed wild-caught fish in terms of volumes for the first time – and will surely pull away from here.
