Every six months, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) does a survey of the chemical industry. Resident economist Paul Hodges, Chairman of International eChem, and Bill Carroll of Carroll Applied Sciences, recently presented their semi-annual look at the factors impacting global markets, with a focus on chemicals.
In their presentation of December 6, 2018, “Chemistry and the Economy: 2019,” sponsored by the American Chemical Society (acs.org), Hodges and Carroll pondered some of the challenges facing the “business as usual” mindset that we seem to be operating in. With multilateral trade agreements crumbling or narrowing, shifting Middle East oil policies, and China beginning to pull back on production, global markets are up against some big challenges.
As Hodges sees it, it’s time to our attention toward developing sustainability in markets and services that suit the needs of current economic and demographic trends.
