In his presentation of November 8, 2017, “Chemistry and the Economy: 2018,” sponsored by the American Chemical Society, Hodges discussed four key scenarios that could challenge today’s “business as usual” mindset in 2018. Hodges finds “the idea that we are in the midst of a synchronized global recovery, highly imaginative.” He believes economists are being overly optimistic and that current trends in chemical capacity utilization and production do not support many GDP growth scenarios.
