The high-strength properties of carbon fibre that have propelled airplane and automotive manufacturers to build lighter, stronger and more efficient products is now at the front door of gas manufacturers and distributors.
Carbon-fibre-wrapped composite cylinders have been on the fringes of the high-pressure gas industry for more than 10 years, being used in such specialty applications as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) tanks and compressed natural gas-powered buses and work trucks.
Today, the introduction of gas transports – tube trailers – using composite cylinders is offering gas distributors the ability to double or triple gas payloads at lighter weights than traditional steel tube trailers.
