Hydrogen production takes many forms – and all will be needed as the hydrogen economy ramps up. Aurora Hydrogen CEO Andrew Gillis spoke to gasworld about the company’s hydrogen tech as its demo plant takes shape
Hydrogen stands at an important crossroads right now. The need for hydrogen production to scale rapidly in a cost-efficient way while also decarbonizing is a twin challenge that is so far proving difficult to pull off. We have some significant blue hydrogen projects starting to take shape from the likes of Air Products, which promise to capture the CO2 emitted by steam methane reforming when hydrogen is collected from natural gas, and that’s one important strand of activity – but it is not enough.
Next to this, green hydrogen from electrolysis is needed to scale up while bringing down carbon emissions – and so far progress has been slower than hoped, despite some huge government subsidies and lots of R&D aimed at moving the dial when it comes to the cost-efficiency and electrical load needed for electrolysis.
