As one of the key supply modes for industrial gases, packaged gases (cylinders) are a fundamental piece of the industrial gas supply jigsaw. With that in mind, it’s little wonder that the industrial gas companies make such substantial investments in cylinders to deliver gases to their customers.

Further still, it’s no surprise that tracking these cylinders is of such importance and so complex. Cylinder tracking is essentially the management and utilisation of an asset and is increasingly big business for the gases industry, enabling real-time cylinder inventory information and/or up-to-the minute, accurate cylinder delivery and location status.
Cylinder tracking can be complex due to the many factors involved, such as the type of gas being manufactured and delivered, while there are many systems, technologies and processes to manage gas cylinder assets. Bar coding and tracking techniques have been in use for years, while more recently the use of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) services and technologies has been taking on ever greater importance in the gases industry.
