It now seems an age away, when, in my last column for gasworld, I spoke of my wish for a Brexit deal. FortunateIy, a Trade and Co-operation Agreement was struck between the UK and the EU on the eve of the festive season, and while time will tell how that will pan out in the weeks, months and years ahead, we continue to monitor and assess the situation.
A starting point to understand more about the key issues for our sector is the new BCGA Brexit webpage. This contains useful links to a wide range of guidance on different regulations relevant to association members, as well as the BCGA’s Brexit FAQs relating to Transportable Pressure Equipment.
The changes introduced will affect the movement of transportable pressure equipment across national boundaries, placing on the market and how and by whom conformity assessment takes place. BCGA worked closely with the Department for Transport to ensure that the industry has a clear overview of the changes that came in.
The online area is being constantly updated, with information provided on key areas of significance to our industry including standards, equipment, transport, healthcare, customs and excise and trade. Taxation, working and travel, as well as the regulation of chemicals are also listed. As well as this site, we are signposting members to further information, including the Government’s Business Readiness Bulletin, which summarises the changes following the end of the Brexit Transition Period. With the signing of the Agreement, the vast majority of traders moving goods between the UK and EU will avoid paying tariffs on that trade. In order to avoid paying tariffs, all traders must – from 1st January – ‘claim preference’ by way of meeting the relevant rules of origin (RoO) for their products and making a declaration to that effect.
